Hocus Pocus by the Swiss choreographer Philippe Saire opens with a mysterious discovery: two bodies that are not immediately visible but are exhibited in a divided and abstract way in a window the size of a large screen. Who are they? Inventive dance and the subterfuges of the staging lead to them discovering one another and then confronting the world together. The two dancers embark on a fantastical journey interspersed with twists and turns, bad weather and quite nice monsters… The illusions in this show cannot be revealed but it is clear through the outburst of elements that while travel broadens the mind, it also reinforces friendship. The narrative framework is sufficiently open for children to be able to construct their own story and recognise themselves in the brotherly relationship found throughout the show. Contemporary dance telling a story to children? This is the challenge accepted so brilliantly by Philippe Saire.
