Commissioned in 2019 by GES-2, Moscow’s new contemporary arts centre, this piece by Olga Dukhovnaya has a political significance that could not have been anticipated when she began working on it. A Russian-speaking Ukrainian who trained at P.A.R.T.S. and settled in France, the artist strips this iconic ballet of Soviet culture to the bone, recycling it by weaving in contemporary scores with Tchaïkovski, and reconstructing it while refraining from irony, coming round to the idea that “dancing this requiem may bring about a fall”.
