Lost in Ballets russes

The great-great-niece of Léon Bakst, the famous painter and set and costume designer for the Ballets Russes, Lara Barsacqspent her childhood immersed in a revolutionary and substantial body of work. The artist’s reproductions, including those of Ida Rubinstein, the fascinating muse and exotic dancer, made a profound impression on her. She found a vocation that has led to her brilliant performing career, including for the Batsheva company, Jérôme Bel and the ballets C de la B. Now Lara Barsacq has drawn on this source of inspiration to create Lost in Ballets russes. From memory, she uses both her great-great-uncle’s drawings and implements and objects dating back to the 1970s, the era of her youth. Out of these elements she creates a choreographic score and an autobiographical piece in homage to her father, envisaging her dance as a rite that transcends time.
