ECCE (H)OMO

ECCE (H)OMO celebrates the fascinating encounter between Paula Pi, a young Brazilian choreographer, and Dore Hoyer (1911-1967), an unconventional figure on the German dance scene. It was in Sao Paolo that Paula Pi discovered a television recording of the German choreographer dancing a cycle of solos entitled Afectos Humanos, the incarnation of different affects: hatred, desire, fear, vanity, love…. Fascinated by the power of the artist’s work, Paula Pi used this recording as a starting point for an investigation going well beyond a simple reproduction of the dance. A classical musician by training, Paula Pi envisages the reenactment of this work as a field of creation, an opportunity to move from one body to another, one language to another, one story to another. In this sense, ECCE (H)OMO is also a piece of research into identity, which is particularly interesting because Dore Hoyer wanting to create universal gestures that are neither masculine nor feminine. Paula Pi intelligently seizes on the issue and plays with her androgyny and cross-dressing to cloud the notion of gender. The piece is captivating thanks to the beauty of the dance and the different levels of interpretation brought into play: past and present, heritage and creation, reality and fiction.
