“Ted” refers to Ted Shawn, the 1930s American choreographer who, accompanied by Ruth St. Denis, elaborated traditional dances from different cultures – Asian, Arab, African, Indian – and explored the impact they could have on his their own culture. These pioneers of modern American dance were interested in dances from other places, adding the layer of the early 20th century body and thus contributing to its liberation. Jérôme Brabant, originally from La Réunion, has recreated some of his dances with Maud Pizon in a kind of danced lecture that will be extended by a choreographic proposition based on a reinterpretation of the solos and duets, music and costumes. Together, between dance, discourse and music, this piece is an exploration of the mysterious dimension of the dances and personalities of Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis. More poetic than historic, it questions notions of exoticism and the view we still have of “foreign” bodies.
