Olivier Tarpaga is a highly energetic artist who divides his time between Burkina Faso and the United States. Visiting his father’s grave, the choreographer and musician understands that the region where he was born, in the north of Burkina Faso, is now living under the shadow of jihadists. In Kaya itself, camps take in people who have fled from their violence and abuse of power. They are mostly women who have been forced to leave their homes and provide for the needs of their children and elderly relatives.
As a humanist and committed artist, Olivier Tarpaga gives voice and body to these uprooted people with six dancers and five musicians who are among the best in Africa. While confronting the tragedy, this “feminist Africanist” piece nevertheless carries hope that once the dust has settled, flowers will bloom again and the songs and dances will return.
