Dimitri Chamblas

Dimitri Chamblas joined the dance school of the Paris Opera at the age of ten. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with the choreographers such as Boris Charmatz, William Forsythe, Emmanuelle Huynh, Benjamin Millepied, and Mathilde Monnier among others. He co-founded Edna association with choreographer Boris Charmatz in 1992. Together they created the duet À Bras-le-corps, which has been performed throughout the world and entered the Paris Opéra ballet repertory in 2018. He participated in the creation of Benjamin Millepied’s Los Angeles Dance Project. In 2015, he was appointed Artistic Director of the 3e Scène – Opéra national de Paris. Since 2017, he has been Dean of the School of Dance at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles, where he lives. His recent projects include a duet with rockstar Kim Gordon; Slow Show, a show questioning time for fifty performers; directing Crowd Out, a David Lang opera for 1,000 singers performed at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Since 2019, he has been working on A_YARD, a piece created with a group of inmates from a maximum-security prison in Los Angeles. His work has been presented at the Tate Modern in London, the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of contemporary art of Los Angeles, the Opéra national de Paris, Performa New York, and the Louvre Museum, among other venues.

Chamblas is currently creating a piece for the L.A. Dance Project cie in collaboration with Kim Gordon and the 15 dancers, starts with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to build a worldwide dance practice program that will take place in various refugee camps around the globe, and continues his academic works about experimental pedagogy.

In 2019 he was made a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. Since 2021, Studio Dimitri Chamblas is supported by the French Ministry of Culture.
