Six dancers come to life to the rhythm of a slam, six colourfully-dressed bodies in different multi-coloured figure-hugging leotards covering them from top to toe.
In Trottoir, the choreographer Volmir Cordeiro orchestrates “a theatre of costumes, gestures and disorder”, a dance of metamorphoses brimming with situations that are borderline, attitudes on the verge of obscenity and violence, frenzied and breaking away. Between hearty laughter, provocation and naive transgression, the Brazilian choreographer shows the street on stage where figures that are more or less identifiable and interchangeable meet and gather. This extended and intense community is pulling in opposite directions, dispersing and coming together again, exploding and concentrating again, bursting with energy, life, desire, madness and an “intoxication to share” with the audience. In this eviscerating and radical approach, Trottoir offers a vision of this so-called “public” space and what happens there when the desire for freedom confronts norms and constraints head on.
