For Lisbeth Gruwez, “contemporary dance can’t be separated from performance in its wider sense.” A muse of Jan Fabre, who composed the extraordinary solo Quando l’uomo principale è una donna with her, Lisbeth Gruwez created the company Voetvolk in 2007 with the musician and composer Maarten Van Cauwenberghe. After a triptych dedicated to the ecstatic body, the dancer and choreographer is absenting herself from the stage for the first time, making way for an irrepressible chorus of ten performers, contemporary shamans of a ritual in fusion, spiced up by the electronic layers of Maarten Van Cauwenberghe’s music. But The Sea Within does not move away from the kind of torrent she has so far unleashed, exploring the way in which emotions are expressed through the body without seeking to curb the chaos that can ensue. This quest, previously conveyed by a focus on the individual, now extends to the collective intelligence of an “us”: an intelligence of muscles, organs and skin.
