The dance world is rediscovering the work of Alain Buffard who died four years ago. It is impossible to sum up the career of this choreographer who created shifts towards other art forms, questioned himself very early on the relationships between the intimate body and society, and through his work as an artist and curator tackled Les voies de la créolisation, borrowing the title of the book by his partner Alain Ménil. The piece we are presenting here, Les Inconsolés, dates from 2005 and tackles the delicate question of the unlawful and lawful in love affairs. Les Inconsolés is an unsettling, disturbing and sensitive piece on turmoil, staging a trio of men in the intimacy of love and desire, accepting it as much as being subjected to it. The relationship with childhood features in the games that at times have nothing innocent about them in their rawness and violence. Shadows and masks contribute to creating a spectacular object, an ideal scenography for these inconsolable beings to play about in beauty and terror.
