Ecdysis came out of a decisive encounter between Jérôme Brabant and a transgender person.
The choreographer listened to her talk about her life, transitioning from one gender to another but also from one continent and one social status to another because the IT trainer working in the United States is now a woman living in eastern France. Jérôme Brabant was struck by the strength of her determination, by how hard she had to fight to effect this transition and undergo this radical change in the face of all opposition.
With the delicacy, distancing and abstraction that characterise him, the choreographer turns her personal story into a metaphor, gradually transforming the fighting bodies of four performers into soothed, hybridised, metamorphous bodies. “ A hymn to the right to be different and
to the freedom to be who you want to be”, Ecdysis universalises the capacity for transformation residing in and motivating people.
