Chaminuka is an excerpt from NEHANDA, an opera directed by the artist nora chipaumire. This three-part project defines itself as a legal and philosophical defence of the first heroes — including Nehanda and Chaminuka — who were resistance fighters against British colonisation in 1889 in the country that is now Zimbabwe, the artist’s homeland. Through singing and dancing, chipaumire pays homage to her ancestors and the warrior spirits fighting for freedom and dignity.
