South African company Via Katlehong was formed in 1992 in a deprived part
of Johannesburg and has turned Pantsula culture into a protest movement. It contrasts unemployment and crime with whistled and sung dance combining tap dance, step, the tap shoes and gumboots of South African miners, dance featuring clapping hands and slapping thighs. For this new production, the seven dancers, led by their mentor Buru Mohlabane, turned to the renowned choreographer Gregory Maqoma. With the dancers and a musician who uses the voice like an instrument, the rhythm of the percussion leads the troupe in a great choral chord in which the story is supported by music created by the moving bodies.
 A choral piece that de es adversity and fear to make a plea for life. The title Kanana in the Sotho language evokes a promised land that does not keep its promise and which, declares Maqoma, urges us to seek out the real promise.
