Une co-présentation Les Halles de Schaerbeek et Charleroi danse

For a number of years now, the Nigerian choreographer and dancer Qudus Onikeku has filmed dancers from his homeland
and asked them about their body memory and the buried strata of gestures, energies and rhythms that get them moving, sometimes without them even being aware of it. In Re:incarnation, the choreographer brings together ten performers from the younger generation and takes them back in time to the Nigeria of the 1970s and afrobeat, the fusion style of musician Fela Kuti which has been a major source of inspiration for Qudus Onikeku. Blended with more recent expressions such as hip hop, dancehall and funky house, Re:incarnation exposes, indeed overexposes, the vitality of young people who are endlessly recycling and transforming artistic expressions of today and yesterday from here and elsewhere. In Re:incarnation Qudus Onikeku and his performers share with the audience an ode to “the pure and uncompromising joy” of Nigerian culture,
the contemporaneity of which carries traces of the past.
