Josef Nadj has already had several lives as a dancer, choreographer, visual artist, photographer and keen reader. There are no limits to his artistic commitment and his multiple talents always emphasise the breadth of his inspiration. Skilled at asking challenging questions, this time he has brought together eight dancers of African origin to celebrate a new start, a kind of return to the essence of dance, his way of envisaging the future within the context of another continent’s tradition. With this unusual group he has sought to rediscover the singularities and signs of a different culture in which the simple body returns, in a shared destiny, to the sources of humanity. Even so, he has not abandoned the usual codes for his shows: a masculine world in which the performers move in black jackets and trousers with sophisticated lighting, created as always by Rémi Nicolas, and a taste for staging that have defined each of his propositions. We can’t wait to see what OMMA – Ancient Greek for “eye, look, what is seen” – reveals of this change in direction.
