Once again, here is the painful story of Odette transformed into Odile, the black swan who is the bearer of misfortune under Rothbart’s evil spell. While being faithful to the original, Preljocaj is a man of today and he transposes the story of the princess swan to the heart of contemporary issues, updating its choreography in the process. In the 19th century, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov interwove four magnificent acts and a carefully crafted, geometric choreography that Preljocaj has great fun distorting.
Along with Giselle, Swan Lake is probably the ballet that best embodies a certain notion of dance, at times almost abstract and yet profoundly rooted in the legendary fairy tale.
Angelin Preljocaj follows in this great tradition.
