Children confined to wheelchairs are told to become like the wind or a cloud, dancers guide and extend their jerky, involuntary movements, children with disabilities look with concentration or dreamily, there are smiles all round, and a girl lets out cries of joy as she is lifted high into the air: all these moments have been captured by Éric Minh Cuong Castaing in the course of a workshop he ran for several months in a specialist centre in Marseille for youngsters with motor disorders. In the film and performance of L’Âge d’or, touch, voices, attention, the quality of gestures and where the look is directed are paths in a choreography written at the very moment when the children’s uncontrollable bodies and the dancers’ very controlled ones meet. Winner of the Audi Talents award in 2017, L’Âge d’or culminates in rapture and animated images of hybrid, coloured beings, like the promise of a new golden age, the mythological era that saw man and gods living in harmony.
