For Guy Duplat (La Libre Belgique), “Kalakuta Republik dizzyingly marries music, dance and African revolution”. Born in Burkina Faso, Serge Aimé Coulibaly set up his company, Faso Danse Théâtre, there in 2002. Without aiming to be biographical, Kalakuta Republik is dedicated to the figure of Fela Kuti, the inventor of Afrobeat and an anti-establishment musician who spoke out on behalf of the counter-culture in West Africa. A first part, in black and white, immerses us in the origins of what Fela was committed to and the movement he pioneered. The brightly coloured second half of the piece is a “carnival of insurrection”, in memory of Shrine, the temple and nightclub where Fela sang about hope and revolt after praying with the crowd. Carried by the music of percussionist Ivan Talbot, seven performers liberate a dance bursting with fervour in the furious ambiance of a discotheque, a base for the uprising by young people.
