In her excellent Jaguar, Marlene Monteiro Freitas has produced a real masterstroke that she shares with her incredible partner Andreas Merk. The two of them have complete knowledge of the stage and have chosen to don the attire of tennis players to give a broad outline of a remarkable movement in art history. In terms of history of art, the matter is settled: The Blue Rider has gone off, forgetting his horse which has pride of place in the middle of the stage, proud of its azure blue finery. All that is left is to summon up puppets and the grotesque, producing a sense of subversion out of all these strange characters. Considerable talent is required to produce such a particular style, where the everyday infiltrates their expert skills and humour is actually a very serious matter.
