Although based now in France following studies in research and choreographic creation at Forum Dança in Lisbon, Ali Moini has not cut his ties with Iran. This was where he first studied traditional Iranian singing, opera singing, music composition and drama before taking part in productions by Amir Reza Koohestani, including the legendary Dance on Glasses. And it was in his homeland of Iran that some of the first rehearsals for Gaugemancy, a piece for four performers, started. What can a body do? And how can it compose with chains around it? In his early pieces Ali Moini was keen on knives or cables. Today the notions of force and pressure are found at the heart of a choreography that explores a wide array of variations, from the practice of witches to that of the wrestler, of making pastry or felt etc. Material in transformation: “pressure”, Ali Moini points out, “brings about change“.
