This time last year we were forced into lockdown in a bid to contain the Covid-19 health crisis. It was a decision that brought preparations for the LEGS festival to a halt just a week before it was due to open. A missed opportunity to meet up, vanishing promises, efforts that came to nothing. Our guest artists were among the first to be impacted and a decision was quickly made to defer the entire programme to 2021. So here we are today, nearing the festival’s launch, but once again forced to make adaptations. Conditions at the moment mean that only Belgian artists can take part and it may only be seen by professionals.

In line with its unique mission, the LEGS festival continues to examine the links dance has with its own history. Summoning well-known or forgotten figures, mythical pieces, leading artistic movements, visual and physical memories, the artists at the festival examine dance’s past and its rich heritage, including more recent legacies. They reveal works that are perfectly rooted in the contemporary world, updating the questions being posed and outstanding forms in the choreographic repertoire. An encounter with the past and the present, needed now more than ever.
