After some fifteen pieces and several projects with professional and amateur dancers of all ages, Jan Martens is bringing to the stage 17 performers aged from 15 to 68 for a programme: “moving forward while staying still”.
At a time of protests such as sit-ins, “Occupy” and “nuits debouts”,
Jan Martens has understood that in order to resist the “march of progress” and its at times harmful consequences, people today have invented the art of being seen not to move.
However, for this choreographer who since starting out has stood out for a conceptual dance that is not danced, it is not about giving in to absolute inertia. He promises
a “generous show, between ecstasy and intimacy, brutality and romanticism” to varied music including protest songs from different eras. Trusting firmly in the body’s power,
both individual and collective, Martens creates a piece of intense topicality with
an “ode to civil disobedience and rebellion”.
